Death Rates Among Detained Immigrants - 1058 Words

There have been a few reports of deaths in deportation centers. Although death is inevitable, some of the deaths that happened between 2003-2015 in deportation centers could have been prevented. Authors Granski, M., Keller, A., Venters, H. wrote an article Death Rates among detained Immigrants in the United States show that health care provided is not enough, and that’s assuming that they receive it. They presented data that showed 150 deaths in 11 years. Some of those deaths were caused due to lack of proper treatment to patients with cancer, and even mental illness â€Å"These concerns have identified gaps in ICE health policies and procedures relating to initial screening of newly arrived detainees, the application of an emergency care†¦show more content†¦The children end up becoming a burden to the state but sometimes cannot leave the country. This plays a major impact on families but also in the economy as well. More often than not, irregular immigrants work for low wages in farms and factories. There’s a misbelief that irregular migrants are a burden to the federal/state government. Contrary to this, a study by the Institute on Taxation Economic Policy(ITEP) found that irregular migrants contribute to billions in taxation. According to Undocumented Immigrants’ State Local Tax Contributions by ITEP â€Å"Undocumented immigrants contribute significantly to state and local taxes, collectively paying an estimated $11.64 billion a year.† These contributions are in form of property, income and sales tax. If deported, the U.S. would not benefit from those 11.64 billion. With this in mind, it should be important to note that many believe the abuse perpetuated in ICE detention centers is because of monetary costs. But, if irregular migrants are contributing more than 11 billion dollars, perhaps those detention centers treat them more humanely. Immigration, in general, sparks up a debate, especially now with our new president Donald Trump. His strong sentiments towards irregular immigrants specifically Mexicans made a lot of citizens and non-citizens curious about his future policies.
